Researcher / PhD Candidate – Battery Ageing, Safety & Circularity (m/f/x)

Battery4Life is a newly founded research company at Graz University of Technology and, as a COMET Center, cooperates with industry and academia in the field of battery technology innovation. The goal is to make batteries more efficient and sustainable. Safe operation is a clear focus to achieve the longest possible service life, both in the vehicle and through subsequent use.
We are looking for a motivated researcher to join our team in the field of lithium-ion battery safety and ageing. The role focuses on investigating the impact of mechanical, thermal, and electrical interventions during battery repair and disassembly on long-term performance, degradation, and safety. Another key aspect is the development of experimental and model-based methods to assess and accelerate the evaluation of these long-term effects.

Job profile

- Investigate how battery repair and disassembly affect ageing and safety.

- Develop models predicting long-term impact of these interventions on lifetime, performance and safety.

- Create accelerated test procedures that reproduce long-term effects within shorter testing times.

- Collaborate with industrial and academic partners with experts in battery safety, manufacturing, automation and sustainability assessment.

- Publish results, pursue a PhD in battery technology and present at international conferences.
Required qualifications

- Master’s degree in mechanical/electrical engineering, physics, chemistry, or a related field.

- Basic knowledge of battery modeling and battery degradation.

- Experience in data acquisition, processing, and modeling (Python, MATLAB, or similar).

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an interest in scientific research.

- Excellent written and spoken English. German knowledge is an advantage, willingness to learn is expected.
Desired qualifications

- Experience in battery testing, ageing studies, modelling, or lifetime prediction.

- Knowledge of battery modelling frameworks (e.g., PyBaMM or similar tools).

- Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams.
